In 1990, Superintendent Maury Sullivan and School Board Member Jim Funk spoke with members of the Business Education Network (BNE) about creating an educational foundation.  Tom Kirchen, BNE member, was asked to be on a steering committee to research the possibilities.

A seminar on starting and running a foundation was being offered in Madison.  No one on the steering committee was available to attend except Tom Kirchen.  Following a few discussions about the logistics of forming a foundation, committee members asked Tom Kirchen to be the founding board president. He accepted and in 1990, the Education Foundation of Wauwatosa, Inc., (EFW) was formed. The committee enlisted the services of a tax attorney and accountant and subsequently named additional board members. The Rotary Club of Wauwatosa made a $5,000 donation with a challenge grant to match up to another $5,000.  Other local service clubs and businesses made donations as well.

The first EFW grants were awarded in 1992.  The Walk/Run was started in 1991with Wauwatosa Savings Bank as the event's first major sponsor.
